This custom single-person boat mattress was ordered and purchased in 2017 from Seattle Mattress Company (SMC). It is 7-in thick, 6-ft long, and 35-in wide maximum with width tapered to fit hull shape. The model name is "SMC Marine Highlands Twin Mattress made with 100% Natural Talalay Latex." The cost was $1325 and included a custom sized fitted mattress pad and fitted sheet which will go with the mattress. The mattress size, contoured shape, and outboard angles were customized to fit the cabin's amidships starboard settee/berth in our 34' LOA 24' LOD wooden carvel-planked double-ender sailboat. Also included in this listing is a contoured epoxy-coated 3/8” marine plywood lifting board that I made to help access equipment stored and mounted underneath the berth.
Soon after installation I slept on the new sheets and mattress two nights and had one afternoon nap. I found it as comfortable as any high quality mattress system I had previously experienced. Since that minimal initial tryout, it has never been slept on again. The little wood boat turned into a project boat and never left the dock. The boat's interior space was well protected from leaks by applying epoxy coating on deck areas and selected joints in the cabin house. Further, the top of the mattress was well-protected with several waterproof pads mainly to prevent stains from coffee as the mattress was used as a desk and space for storage of light weight project parts, tasks for which the mattress worked quite well. Further, excellent ventilation from underneath the mattress was provided by a Froli support system which lifted it about 1.5" up off the berth floor or lifting board. The photos help demonstrate how well-preserved is this mattress.
The marina slip was convenient, but it was unfortunately in fresh water. In Sept 2025 the old wood boat succumbed to terminal wood rot in keel and sternpost despite previous topical anti-rot measures. So all of the boat's nice new equipment and furnishings was removed to our home to be stored and listed for sale on Craigslist and/or other sites. Someone just bought the Froli system separately from underneath the mattress in early Sept 2026, so this listing's original version has been revised accordingly.
This mattress could be a really good deal for someone wanting a high quality virtually new mattress for a starboard-side foot-forward berth of similar dimensions (detailed with angles in the final attached image). The mattress could also work well in many port-side foot-aft quarter-berths of similar size, though the height of the mattress and the available height in the quarter-berth space would need consideration. Another limitation for some people could be the 6' length which was due to the available berth space length I had to work with. However, for someone interested in getting a pristine $1325 (2017 price) custom premium mattress for just a few hundred dollars, it would not be difficult make up a length deficit with cushions, pillows, or even a rolled up blanket and still have a very attractive and comfortable berth.
The lifting board is certainly optional. It can be quite useful mainly for a berth with enough overhead space to allow a user to angle the inboard side of the mattress upwards 45° or so in order to gain top access to any openable space below the berth. In such a position the lifting board can be supported either by angled boards holding up each end or by a cord from above attached to the lifting eye strap shown in the photos near the middle of the lifting board's inboard edge. I chose to use both: I used an overhead cord looped through another pad eye on one of the curved laminated frames of the cabin house ceiling to do the lifting, but then I used wood braces on either end to take the strain off the ceiling framing.
