This dining set is truly amazing. I have rarely seen anything quite like it—especially a complete, perfectly matched set of eight chairs paired with an authentic Ethan Allen extension table in such rock-solid condition. The overall design features sturdy classic lines, rich wood character, and exquisite hand-detailed craftsmanship throughout.
The table: At the heart of the set is an authentic Ethan Allen Old Tavern extension table crafted from solid knotty pine in a deep, warm amber-chestnut finish. Ethan Allen’s Old Tavern line was designed to capture the cozy, substantial feel of 18th-century New England taverns and country inns—celebrating heavy grain, natural knots, and robust American craftsmanship.
Starts as a compact, cozy 48-inch round table—ideal for everyday meals or smaller spaces. Includes two 15-inch leaf inserts, transforming the table into a spacious 78-inch oval banquet table that comfortably seats all eight guests for holidays and family gatherings.
The Chairs: Complementing the table is a full, matching set of eight vintage Ethan Allen rock maple dining chairs featuring classic arrow-back spindles, turned legs, double H-stretchers, and deeply contoured saddle seats built for comfort. Each chair is topped with an elegant, hand-applied fruit and floral motif across the crest rail, giving them a warm, timeless rustic appeal.
These chairs are designed in the iconic Hitchcock style—an authentic American design tradition pioneered by Connecticut cabinetmaker Lambert Hitchcock in the 1820s. Original Hitchcock pieces were famous for combining sturdy turned spindles with hand-applied gold/bronze fruit or floral stencils as an accessible alternative to high-end hand-carved Federal furniture.
Ethan Allen Craftsmanship: Founded in 1932 during the Great Depression, Ethan Allen built its reputation on solid hardwoods and traditional joinery. In the mid-to-late 20th century, while other manufacturers shifted to plastics and pressboard, Ethan Allen doubled down on heirloom quality. They drew heavily from Early Empire heritage for their Heirloom Collection, pairing signature stencil motifs with Arrow-Back Windsor construction, contoured saddle seats, and splayed legs.
While these pieces anchored Colonial Revival homes in the 1970s and 1980s, today they bring incredible warmth, texture, and character into contemporary spaces. They pair effortlessly with Modern Farmhouse, Cottagecore, Lake House/Cabin, Rustic, Warm Minimalist, Maximalist, or Eclectic/ Transitional Decor. They offer a grounded, authentic antique feel and construction that mass-produced modern furniture just can't replicate.
Condition: All eight chairs and the extension table are structurally rock solid with no loose joints or wobbles. They feature factory-applied intentional distressing (such as subtle faux wear on the top rails), so what minor vintage scuffs they’ve picked up over the decades blend right in as natural patina and character. The base has some scratching and wear. See picture. It is not too bad but it can be refreshed with a can of mohawk tinted acrylic lacquer which would cover and blend nicely.
