It is a classic sign of spring in warmer climates (Zones 8-11) when the Shampoo Ginger (Zingiber zerumbet), also known as Awapuhi or Pinecone Ginger, starts to send up new, vibrant green leaf shoots from its dormant rhizomes. After dying back to the ground during winter, these tropical plants often seem gone forever, but they are known for returning "with a vengeance" as temperatures rise. The ideal planting site is in partial shade to partial sun, with moist, fertile soil. Shampoo ginger is moderately salt and drought tolerant.
