Set of 2, vintage 1940's-50's, oxblood red, Maruni Lacquerware from occupied Japan. Pieces are in excellent and like new condition. Color is deep red with gold floral, hand painted or stenciled designs. Unique pieces as both vases hold water while also holding books. Backs of vases were designed flat so that they can also sit flush against a wall as half- vases/bookends. Produced in Japan during the post WW11 occupation period, they are really interesting pieces. Each bookend measures 7" tall and is 5" wide.
