• Landfill Attendant (Part-Time): $17.39-18.26/hr.
The City of Salina Public Works Department is seeking dependable, safety-focused team members to support essential solid waste services for our community. Depending on qualifications, experience, & operational need, successful candidates may be considered for work in sanitation collection, landfill operations, or landfill customer-service/scale-house operations.
This is an opportunity for individuals with strengths in manual labor, equipment operation, construction, customer service, cash handling, clerical work, or solid-waste operations to build a career serving Salina residents & businesses.
What You’ll Do
Work assignments may include one or more of the following:
• Collect refuse, recycling, yard waste, & bulky items on assigned routes.
• Load & unload materials safely & efficiently; help keep streets, alleys, public spaces, & disposal areas clean.
• Assist with landfill cleanup, litter collection, grounds maintenance, & disposal-site activities.
• Operate equipment such as loaders, skid steers, dozers, compactors, graders, water trucks, roll-off trucks, & related tools—based on qualifications & assignment.
• Move, level, compact, & cover solid waste; help maintain landfill roads & work areas.
• Inspect incoming materials & help prevent prohibited or hazardous waste from entering the landfill.
• Direct customers & commercial vehicles to appropriate landfill unloading areas & manage traffic flow.
• Read scales, record disposal weights, process disposal charges & payments, issue tickets/receipts, & maintain accurate reports.
• Provide clear, courteous guidance to residents & customers regarding landfill procedures, fees, acceptable materials, & recycling options.
• Perform basic equipment servicing, minor repairs, cart repairs, & maintenance checks as assigned.
• Follow all City safety requirements, traffic-control procedures, PPE standards, & applicable environmental regulations.
The work supports safe, reliable collection & disposal operations while providing professional service to the public. Sanitation roles involve strenuous, active work on collection routes; landfill equipment roles involve operation over uneven terrain; attendant roles combine public interaction, recordkeeping, & outdoor site work.
What We’re Looking For
Applicants with one or more of the following backgrounds are encouraged to apply:
Sanitation & labor: Waste collection, recycling, landscaping, construction, warehouse, moving, or other physically demanding work
Heavy equipment: Dozer, compactor, loader, skid steer, grader, scraper, truck, or construction-equipment operation
Customer service & administration: Cashiering, payment processing, office support, dispatch, records, customer service, or computer-based data entry
Maintenance: Basic mechanical work, equipment inspections, welding, minor repair, & hand/power-tool use
Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid Kansas driver’s license & reliable transportation.
• Ability to work outdoors in changing & adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to follow safety procedures, communicate effectively with coworkers & the public, & work reliably with limited supervision appropriate to the assignment.
• Ability to perform the physical requirements of the assigned role.
Physical & Work Environment
These positions require work in & around traffic, heavy vehicles, equipment, dust, odors, noise, & outdoor weather conditions.
• Sanitation assignments: Heavy physical work, including frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, stooping, extensive walking, & running at a moderate pace.
• Landfill equipment assignments: Heavy work & operation of equipment over rough, uneven, & potentially hazardous terrain.
• Landfill attendant assignments: Light physical work with a combination of sitting, standing, walking, customer interaction, cash handling, & clerical duties.
