UNIQUE Crazy Weird Chain? Links? Connectors? Whatever?
Here is where I hope when they say ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’, is correct. I’ve had this stuff for so long I have no idea where it even came from, just stuff I’ve picked up over the years, and they are not related. To me they have just been what I call good ‘Show n Tell’ stuff, because out of the many times I’ve shown them to people, they’ve never had the slightest idea what they were or what they might be for. The solid bronze links can connect in a continuous circle, and be worn as a bracelet, lol.
From ChatGPT, only some of it, just the highlights;
On the bronze links;
What you have appears to be a continuous articulated link chain/belt made from individually cast links. Each link has a cylindrical male pivot on one end and a C-shaped/open female socket on the other. The next link’s pivot is captured by that socket. That explains why there is no clasp, beginning, end, or special joining link.
On the steel links;
Each roughly 2-inch rectangular piece appears to be a cast metal link that can be opened. One long side is removable, and the two small slotted screws secure that removable section at the enlarged bosses. That allows a link to be inserted into or removed from the chain without cutting or bending anything. Screw-type connecting links are a recognized form of chain hardware, including industrial chains, although the examples I found aren’t an exact match to yours.
The assembled chain is particularly revealing. The links alternate orientation, as normal chain must, but they’re unusually elongated and squared-off. The screws appear recessed/protected within the enlarged ends rather than sticking out. That looks intentional and relatively sophisticated.
One possibility I’d investigate seriously
I wonder whether these are links from an old adjustable animal restraint/tether, harness, or similar specialized chain. The approximately 2-inch link length, easily removable links, rounded surfaces, and relatively substantial construction would make sense for something that needed its length adjusted while avoiding sharp projections.
