This artisanal biochar is produced from slash and debris from the tree and brush management on our farms. It is a form of pyrolyzed charcoal that contains a very large surface area to enable it to capture and hold nutrients and water vs. getting flushed out of the soil. It is also a stable form of carbon sequestration that can be implemented at the smallscale level.
This biochar is activated through dousing the embers with water as the final step of the biochar process which creates steam and further increases the pore volume and surface area. This biochar is not charged with nutrients, so it should be added to a compost pile or treated with nutrients / compost tea to absorb nutrients before it is applied directly to the garden.
We find great success in adding the biochar as a component to our poultry and livestock bedding. This allows the biochar to be fully charged via the animal manures, but also greatly helps in absorbing the muck and odors associated with wood chip, wood shaving and straw bedding only.
