Working – Antique 1905 Thomas Edison GEM Phonograph - a compact, cylinder-based phonograph developed during the golden age of mechanical sound reproduction. Manufactured by the Edison Phonograph Company. $1,000 or best offer.
Design and Features
• Construction: Small but sturdy cast-iron base.
• Power: Spring-driven and operated by winding a crank. The motor mechanism allows the cylinder to rotate smoothly, enabling consistent playback.
• Horn: The sound is amplified acoustically through a morning-glory-style horn, which is detachable, made of metal.
• Playback Medium: Like other Edison phonographs, the GEM played cylinders, the standard format at the time. Included is a 2-minute recording.
• Reproducer: The machine uses a diaphragm-and-stylus assembly called a reproducer, which translated the grooves on the cylinder into sound.
