To get a good understanding of what this poster depicts, Google the Opera "Faust" by Charles Gounod.
The poster depicts the final scene in the opera. In it Marguerite is climbing a staircase to Heaven, while Mephistopheles grabs Faust and they fall through a trapdoor in the stage to the flames of Hell.
If one examines the dark imagery closely, figures of the damned can be seen in Hell. Conversely, if one examines the bright burst at the top of the poster, one can find the staircase, Marguerite, and angels.
The poster is in a gold-colored wood frame under UV glass. It has never been hung where sunlight could reach it.
The production was commissioned in 1985. Forty-one years later it remains popular and has been used by opera companies all of North America. I had the pleasure of seeing it three times during my Houston years and it remains a fond memory.
I originally listed it at $150 but have reduced my asking price to $125.
