MARK 5: The Classic 5-in-1 Woodworking System - drill press, horizontal boring, lathe, table saw and disc sander — in one compact machine.
The Shopsmith Mark V is an American-made, multi-purpose woodworking machine that combines five primary workshop tools into a single, compact footprint.
The Five Core Modes
The machine converts between all five functions without requiring major disassembly:
• Table Saw: Features up to 2 HP of cutting power (depending on the model), variable speed control (250–10,000 RPM or standard ranges), a self-aligning rip fence, and dado or moulding capabilities.
• Drill Press: Utilizes a vertical position with a moving spindle (quill) and generous circle/depth capacity.
• Lathe: Offers roughly 34 inches of length and a 16.5-inch diameter capacity for turning wood projects.
• Horizontal Boring Machine: Allows for end-grain holes, long stock boring, and buffing or grinding arbors.
• Disc Sander: A 12-inch steel or aluminum disc used for edge sanding and jointing.
Key Design and Features
• Single Power Source: All modes run off a single motor housed in a movable headstock.
• Variable Speed Control: A front-mounted dial changes the speed and torque ratio (such as slowing down for high-torque tasks or speeding up for sanding and routing).
• Interchangeability: Parts and accessories across decades of production (dating back to the 1950s) maintain compatibility with newer frames.
• Expandability: Can accept Special Purpose Tools (SPTs) such as a band saw, belt sander, jointer, scroll saw, and thickness planer.
