How It WorksPurpose: People used these in the 19th and 20th centuries to quickly and safely start wood fires in fireplaces or stoves.
The Liquid: The pot was filled with a safe burning fuel like kerosene or coal oil.
The Wand: A long iron rod with an absorbent stone (usually pumice) sat inside the liquid. You would light the soaked stone and place it under the logs.
