Mason bees are lovely little solitary bees that fill up reeds like this and pack mud or clay around each baby-to-be. They are sweet and don’t sting like honeybee / hive bees. Masons start early in spring – as early as a bee can get in the Midwest…if you have early crops or fruit trees that need pollination, these are the bees for you!
This setup also hosts other bees, including leafcutters that are summer bees.

These are living things and you need to learn how to take care of them and make sure you want them!
I do have their Tower house (pictured) with bird guard, but was still having trouble with birds pecking in there, so I made this custom built bee house with a hinged door.
I have a box full of nesting materials, guard bags, harvest tools, etc.
I also have clay along with a custom setup I devised to keep the clay moist more easily. I also have a 2 bucket system I use with local clay.
I have a few reeds filled with masons, so you should probably have enough to get started in spring, but you can always buy them from Crown Bees.
DO NOT CONFUSE THIS WITH CHEAP BEE HOUSES AT THE HARDWARE STORE – those are actually quite deadly to bees – again, do some research on Crown Bees’ site.
