Looking for a new owner fast – we are moving overseas and have finally realized that we are running out of time. Offering a 1978 Pearson 31 (hull #25) FREE to anyone willing to continue my project. She’s a great boat for learning, playing, or racing. Easy to single hand. Current slip rental ends November 1, boat will be taken to Flag Harbor Yacht Haven for destruction/recycling if no home can be found by November 16, so if you are interested, please contact me immediately!
VESSEL HISTORY:
First owner raced her with the Southern Maryland Sailing Association (SMSA) until he graduated to a bigger boat. Second owner graduated to a bigger job and let her sit on a private pier unattended for approx. 7 years. I then acquired her for free as part of the second owner’s get rid of all responsibilities retirement special and spent a year bringing her back to life.
The Atomic 4 engine still ran after minimal maintenance, standing rigging is in serviceable condition, and the array of Dacron and laminate sails are in excellent condition (2-3 spinnakers, 1 Chutescoop spinnaker sleave, 2 mainsails, 6 headsails).
Vessel was hauled in 2017 and the following repairs/upgrades were made:
• Osmotic blister repairs: hull from the waterline to the keel was peeled, cleaned, dried, reglassed, faired, and epoxy barrier coat applied.
• New bronze Groco thru hulls with sea cocks, backing plates, and all associated hoses installed/replaced: 2 cockpit drains, galley sink, head sink, head discharge (plugged). Only remaining thru hull that hasn’t been replaced is the engine intake.
• New drive shaft, prop shaft flange, cutlass bearing, and three blade prop
• Stuffing box hose, hose clamps, and flax stuffing box packing replaced
• New Raymarine i50 depth sounder (transducer installed)
• Original water tanks within the settees were removed, space painted, covers replaced
• 30amp SmartPlug installed (existing 25 foot, 30 amp shore power cord updated with SmartPlug connection)
• Black ablative bottom paint, Grand Banks Beige bootstripe, black vinyl cove stripe
• 4 Lewmar winches cleaned and serviced
• New Sunbrella mainsail cover
• Door to head resurfaced with white laminate
Boat was launched June 2018 and has served intermittently as both day sailor and liveaboard vessel. In continuation of improvements, and then in preparation for sale, I intended to paint the decks, update all deck hardware, complete the replacement of all lighting and wiring in the boat, relocate the battery bank, replace all remaining hoses, reupholster all cushions, add insulation and wooden slats to v-berth walls, etc. The list never really ends.
Here’s where you get to take on the project. About 90% of the materials needed to complete these projects have been purchased and will be included. All deck hardware has been removed, decks stripped, faired, and mostly primed. Holes for lifeline stanchion bases and deck fills have been glassed over (except for fuel fill). Anchor locker has been painted, includes 50ft of chain, 150ft rode, Danforth anchor. Chainplates polished and rebedded. Mast collar rebedded and mast boot replaced. Portlights have been removed and kit purchased from Catalina Direct with all sealants and gaskets necessary to fully refurbish and seal portlights. Bowmar hatch for above v-berth powder coated, new lens and sealant purchased. External heat exchanger for closed coolant system stripped and repainted.
Below is a non-exhaustive list of materials included:
• Atomic 4 engine rewire kit from Moyer Marine
• Blue Sea Systems 8084 AC Main +6 Positions/DC Main +15 Positions Toggle Circuit Breaker Panel
• SEAFLO 33-Series Water Pump & Accumulator Tank System, 12V DC, 3.0 GPM, 45 PSI

• 4x8ft sheet of white laminate (for table and nav station)
• Fabric to reupholster cushions. I completed the 4 settee seatback cushions.
Let me know if you have any questions. I would love to share before and after photos and my intentions to aid you in the continuation of the project or to identify mystery hardware. There’s still a bag of mystery hardware that I received with the boat.
