We are seeking a patient, engaging, and experienced teacher or tutor to work one-on-one with a 34-year-old man who has a degree in Biochemistry from City College and a lifelong love of learning.
He is an adult with ADHD and has significant challenges with attention, social communication, and maintaining focus for extended periods. He is highly intelligent, curious, and enthusiastic about subjects that interest him. And he is very passionate about math and science. He responds well to individualized, structured instruction that is tailored to his learning style, attention needs, and pace.
At this point, we are not looking for a traditional academic program or degree path. Instead, we would like to give him the opportunity to continue learning in a meaningful way with an experienced teacher who can help expand his knowledge and build on his interests.
We are looking for consistent weekly instruction, with thoughtfully designed homework, reading, or projects between sessions. The goal is to create an ongoing learning experience rather than occasional tutoring.
We are primarily seeking a science and/or math tutor, with particular interest in:
● Science: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Biology, and related areas
● Mathematics: Geometry and other applied math topics
He also has a wide range of interests that can be incorporated into lessons to make instruction more engaging and meaningful, including:
● Geography, maps, and mapmaking
● Nature, animals, wildlife, and ecosystems
● Languages and linguistics
● Cartoons and animated films.
● Music (music theory, the student play violin and piano)
● Art (talented artist)
We would especially welcome a tutor who enjoys creatively connecting science and math concepts to these interests when appropriate. For example, lessons might use animals, nature, animation, maps, familiar movie themes and the student’s many other interests as a way to make scientific and mathematical ideas more engaging and help sustain attention.
He has expressed an interest in graduate school, but a conventional graduate program would currently be difficult because of his attention and support needs. Our goal is to create an individualized continuing-education experience where he can keep learning, asking questions, working on projects, and exploring subjects in depth without the pressures of a traditional classroom.
The ideal person will be patient, dependable, well-organized, sincere, flexible, and genuinely enthusiastic about teaching. Experience working with autistic adults, neurodivergent students, or students with attention challenges is a plus. Just as important is the ability to adapt lessons, break material into manageable parts, maintain engagement, and tailor instruction to his specific needs.
This could be a great fit for a science or math teacher, professor, graduate student, researcher, retired educator, or other subject-matter expert who enjoys one-on-one teaching.
Location: Washington Heights/Inwood, near the A and 1 trains at 181st Street. We are open to instruction taking place in his apartment or at another appropriate location, depending on what works best for both student and instructor.
Pay: $75–$100 per hour, depending on experience and the scope of instruction.
If interested, please reply with a little about your background, the subjects you teach, any experience working with autistic or neurodivergent learners, and your general availability.
Principals only. Recruiters, please don't contact this job poster.
