2 Capodimonte Applied Magnolia Flowers Shell Dish & Bowl Vtg. 1940s - $40 (New Hyde Park)

1. Shell shaped dish with a mauve color magnolia attached to the top. The details of the flower are magnificent. The stigma in the center is defined and intricate. Measures approximately 7” long x 4 3/4” wide x 1 3/4” tall (tip of the highest petal.) The underside has an incised triangle and a “V” in black ink. Initially, I thought the “V” represented California artist, Vee Jackson, but could find nothing to support that theory. In the 1950s Jackson produced a very similar dish, however, the details and dimensions were somewhat different. There is a possibility the “v” could be a Roman Numeral 5.
2. Bowl / Ashtray. The colors are similar to the shell dish, however, the applied flower is a rosebud. Measures approximately 6” in diameter x 3 3/4” tall (tip of the rose.) The underside has incised what appears to be the initials “LV” or the Roman numerals for 55. It could also be an Arabic number “3.” There are indented sections on the rim which suggest it was intended as an ashtray. Their size is suitable for balancing a cigarette. Can also be used as a candy dish etc. This is an extremely rare piece.
Both of this pieces are striking. Their colors and compositions are very impressive.
Their condition is excellent. No chips, cracks, repairs, crazing etc. Flowers, vines and leaves are intact. No issues whatsoever. They were displayed behind glass for decades.
