The early- to mid-’90s Flatiron mandolins are very nice instruments – this one included. The Flatiron company was bought by Gibson in 1987, and the latter built mandolins under the former’s brand name for 10 years before relocating the company headquarters to Nashville. Bruce Weber, the head acoustic tech at this time, later went on to establish the Weber mandolin company in Montana. This “F-5 Master” (essentially their version of a Master Model) is an excellent bluegrass mandolin with great cut, a thick chop, and a really sweet tone. Features include beautiful fern inlay on the headstock, a “speed neck,” a radiused fingerboard, scooped fingerboard extension, and a gold Gibson-style tailpiece. The nut width is 1 3/32”.
Overall, the mandolin is in great shape, with a few scattered, very minor nicks and dings as well as a bit of surface wear (on the body and headstock) as well as minor lacquer “aging” here and there. There is almost no fretwear, just the very beginnings of wear on the first three frets beneath the A string. The maple on the back looks killer and almost three-dimensional.
