“Little joe” is a 4 coming 5 year old Warm Springs Reservation mustang. Started 5 months ago and has had about 100 rides. He is a young horse girls dream and would likely excel in a trail or gaming home. Not in a hurry to sell, I have no problem keeping him through the winter and finishing him myself.
Pros:
- an absolute goober
- the most affectionate and in your pocket horse I’ve ever been around
- easy keeper on good pasture, grass hay, orchard grass and does not get hot on feeds or grain
- gets along with just about everybody, has been with mares a ton and is not stupid.
- easy on the farrier
- will stand tied all day with no issues
- is not spooky and handles new situations and obstacles with a steady mind.
- has a great stop and smooth gaits
- great mover and is athletic
- easy to saddle and stands great to mount
- is amazing on trails and has a nice slow walk. Never is a hurry horse.
- has been around dogs, cats, goats, small children, heavy equipment, loud noises and so far nothing fases him.
Rides out alone or in a group all the same, in a group he prefers to bring up the caboose.
Cons:
- Had a bucking issue when he was started. We believe he is over it and has not offered to buck since I started camping on him.
- a proper saddle fit, good pad and cinches are essential for him. He is relatively thin skinned and has gotten cinch sores and does not tolerate pinching.
- had also pulled back when we first got him as he’d never been hard tied. He is always hard tied now and hasn’t pulled back In months. Though I would not tie him to anything flimsy just in case.
- he struggles with his left lead, picks it up easily on the ground but in the saddle needs more work
- he is not fancy broke or even technically finished, he does not slide stop or neck reign. He is currently learning to do all these things but I will not sell him as finished.
- while I have put a beginner on him and he was fine, he is absolutely NOT a beginner horse. He will need an intermediate rider to finish him to make him the incredible horse I know he is.
