The School Kitchen Manager / Cook is responsible for the daily operation of a small, two-person school kitchen. Most of the food is prepared at another kitchen and delivered to the school. The Manager / Cook works hands-on with the kitchen team to receive food, prepare and reheat meals, complete light cooking and preparation, serve students and staff, maintain inventory, and keep the kitchen clean, organized, and compliant with food-safety requirements.
Responsibilities
Oversee the daily operation of the school kitchen.
Work hands-on with one other kitchen employee to complete daily duties.
Receive food deliveries from the main kitchen and check quantities and condition.
Properly store, label, and organize delivered food.
Reheat and finish prepared foods according to instructions.
Prepare simple items such as salads, vegetables, sandwiches, sides, and other light-cooking items.
Prepare and portion meals for students and staff.
Ensure food is ready and served on time.
Monitor food temperatures and follow food-safety procedures.
Maintain kitchen inventory and communicate food and supply needs.
Organize daily tasks and assign responsibilities between the two kitchen employees.
Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen, including work areas, equipment, and dishes.
Follow proper food storage, labeling, and FIFO procedures.
Minimize food waste and maintain appropriate portion sizes.
Communicate with the main kitchen regarding deliveries, quantities, menus, and special requests.
Ensure the kitchen follows all school, company, health-department, and food-safety policies.
Assist with all kitchen duties as needed.
Qualifications
Previous kitchen or food-service experience preferred.
Basic cooking and food-preparation skills.
Ability to work independently and take responsibility for the daily kitchen operation.
Ability to organize tasks and work efficiently with one other employee.
Knowledge of basic food safety and sanitation.
Reliable, punctual, and responsible.
Good communication and organizational skills.
Ability to stand for extended periods and lift kitchen supplies as needed.
