We are a retired couple who have been traveling and collecting art and ethnographic objects for over 60 years. But that was then. Now: we recently sold our large retirement home and have moved into much smaller accommodations. Not surprisingly, we need to do some serious downsizing. Too much stuff! It is time for us to help some of our objects find a new Happy Home.
This listing is for an original lithographic print (and its accompanying Certificate of Authenticity) that we purchased directly from the artist Wilhelm Meinzer when travelling in Switzerland in 1981. We never got around to framing or displaying it. Again, too much stuff. The print has been stored away in an envelope and has never been exposed to sunlight.
The Print
“Ronco s/Ascona 1981 mit Cypressen”
(Ronco above Ascona with Cypresses)
Offset lithograph after original pen drawing
Size: 30 x 21 cm
Number 74 of a limited edition of 100
Signed and numbered in pencil by the artist
Ronco sopra Ascona in the Swiss canton of Ticino has long attracted artists, photographers, writers, and collectors because of its dramatic views over Lago Maggiore and its distinctive cypress-lined landscapes.
The Artist, Wilhelm Meinzer (born 1943), is a German artist and photographer best known for his landscape imagery and architectural subjects, often connected with Italy, Switzerland, and Mediterranean landscapes. His work has been exhibited in museums in Germany and Switzerland.
The print is in excellent condition. Never displayed, never exposed to sunlight. No foxing, no mat burn, no toning, no creases, margins intact.
The print is also an excellent example of the artist’s work, combining both architectural and landscape subjects that were a major focus of his work. Strong architectural imagery dominates the center of the print. A massive retaining wall and the village church with its tall bell/clock tower, Chiesa Madonna delle Grazie (Church of Our Lady of Grace). Flanking landscape elements including a horse chestnut tree and a row of cypresses soften the print’s visual impact, as does the sky’s negative space that silhouettes the church tower.
The work shows careful and highly controlled pen technique.
• dense crosshatching in the trees,
• linear perspective in the roadway,
• expressive treatment of the cypresses
This original limited edition print has been appraised at $250 to $500. We are offering it to a new appreciative owner at $100.
