This is a rare fixture and a piece of theatrical lighting history. It was a line of fixtures originally developed by Vari-Lite (later sold to ETC) as a small format companion to their theatrical fixtures. This one is based upon the original VL-5 and became known as the “Baby VL-5” or “VL-5 Mini”. It features a reduced size Dichro*Tune™ radial color changing system.
In the days of LED everything, it is interesting and historical to see the interworking and ingenuity of a mechanical color changing mechanism - a historic and award winning mechanism by the way.
The fixture is in what I would describe as “semi-working” condition. When power is applied, it goes through a partial power up sequence. No lamp is included.
The good news is that all of the glass color fins are in tact which is the most rare part. Most obviously missing is the front diffuser (plastic “lens” that covers the front of the fixture). It also appears that one of the belts may be loose or missing since it pans freely but I haven’t taken the time to fully it tech it. It very well may be possible to order these from ETC but I haven’t checked lately.
I original acquired this one to use as a desk-art piece but am now in the process of downsizing my nostalgic items.
This would be a great project to restore, or to display since it is much smaller that most theatrical lighting fixtures, and doesn’t require a large support rig. They are hard to find so I wasn’t sure what the going price is these days. Feel free to make an offer.
