I know, you clicked on this because you said "HUH?" It's a plant, it's called Amaranthus Hypochondriacus. If you're not familiar, it's one of thee most beautiful plants around. Look at the pictures. This plant/small tree has origins in Mexico, but, this particular plant's DNA hails from Montenegro 20 years ago, the seeds brought over from someone I know. I have grown these every year for 20 years now.
These grow usually about 10 feet tall as you can see the one in the picture is 4 feet above my 6 foot privacy fence. I have had MANY grow at high as 11 and 12 feet, with a couple of them reaching my gutters. These grow big, they grow beautiful and the best part, spend $50 and you'll have them for life as they are essentially perennials. The seeds from this plant will "re-seed" itself just because there are THOUSANDS of seeds in a bloom. Thousands. For $50.
All you need to do is spread them in dirt, or a lawn and they will emerge about late May and grow like mad from June through the first frost/freeze. The second best part is that they are basically, pretty much maintenance free. Spread the seeds and forget about them until you see them in their glory. I don't ever water mine and they have even grown out of the concrete/driveway! You do not have to water them.
And that my friend is the only downfall, if you even think it's a downfall. Be careful where you spread the seeds. The winds will blow them around too. You will have them sprouting everywhere. So if you plant them near a food garden or near a nice sodded lawn, you will have to pull them out before they get big. They seriously grow everywhere, I think they'd grow on top of a bald headed guy! You have been warned.
IF YOU WANT A BEAUTIFUL BORDER between a neighbor or a back fence, you will have the most beautiful scene and border around. People will stop you every day to ask what kind of plant it is. I am serious about that. If you display this plant as a front and center piece of your landscape, just about every day someone will ask.
Or if you just want a few around the property, front, center, back or sides, you will thank me later I am certain you will email me to say you love it.
I have large blooms for $60. There are literally seriously thousands of seeds.
I have smaller blooms for $50. Again, there are literally thousands of seeds.
