Up for grabs here is one of the largest tabletop letterpresses ever made by the Wm. Golding Co. of Boston - an 8-1/4” x 12-1/2” Golding Official No. 6 in wonderful, lightly restored condition. Aside from a little paint touch-up in places and the usual oiling and cleaning work, the press required very little to get back into this wonderful state of preservation (and operation)!
Interestingly, this one is a very late model for Golding (serial no 2025) and the only Golding model I’ve personally owned whose serial number isn’t listed in the production logbooks. My guess is that this model was produced in the mid to late ‘20s after William Golding passed away and his sons sold the company to ATF. The last number listed for the Official No. 6 is #1763. While the date is unclear for this final entry, it appears to me that it was sometime in 1914.
The press operates smoothly and quietly. With its large impression area it is a very capable machine that only requires a fraction of the amount of shop space as most floor presses. It would be perfectly suited for a smaller letterpress or book arts shop, or as a centerpiece of any collection. It’s a real beauty … and quite a beast, too. The lever arm is nearly 3 feet long!
Includes a chase and TWO sets of rollers (one original set and one brand new set with adjustable trucks - custom made at more than $300). Original gripper arms are also present, but unfortunately the original (and so often broken) gripper actuator assembly is missing. This isn’t a huge deal for most print jobs and the assembly could either be (1) fabricated if you’re handy or (2) sidestepped altogether by using a frisket.
The press and I are located in Lockhart, Texas (zip code 78644, just south of Austin). Because of the weight, fragility, and historical significance of the press, I really do not want to risk shipping it. Weight is nearly 250 lbs., but can be fairly easily managed by two people with a little disassembly and would fit in the cargo area of most SUVs.
I’m frequently in Austin and San Antonio and would be glad to meet up with buyers to assist with delivery. I'm flexible, and if you're coming to pick up I'm glad to store the press (once paid for) for as long as needed. I’d even be willing to accommodate a fairly long distance delivery or meet-up for the cost of fuel. Please reach out to discuss options and what might work for you. I’m glad to help in any way I can!
Asking $1850 for the press, and I can accept payment by PayPal, Zelle, or cash. Offers cheerfully considered - please don’t hesitate to shoot me a message or offer if you’d like to make this wonderful press yours. Thanks for looking!
