The Three Mile Island accident was a partial nuclear meltdown of the Unit 2 reactor located on the Susquehanna River in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
The reactor accident began at 4:00 a.m. on March 28, 1979, and released radioactive gases and radioactive iodine into the environment. It is the worst accident in U.S. commercial nuclear power plant history, although its small radioactive releases had no detectable health effects on plant workers or the public.
The initial scare caused Pennsylvania State government offices to setup temporary residence in Selinsgrove Pennsylvania until all calmed down in the Harrisburg capital area. I was tasked with upgrading the telecommunications equipment and traveled to Hershey office to pickup spares.
Was a memorable trip, car loads of folks with kids, pets and luggage traveling up highway 11&15 leaving the area and I am driving towards the area, kind of surreal memory.
3 mile island reactors are scheduled to be back up and running as the Crane Clean Energy Center in 2027!
The cup and case was crafted by Russ Hall, Union NH. The cup and its commemorative case are in great shape, it just needs a home to show it off.
