Hatched this spring, they dont have their trains yet but will get them. Male peacocks begin growing their iconic, colorful tail feathers (called a "train") around 1 to 3 years of age, reaching full adult maturity and their most vivid display at 3 years old (with maximum length and splendor developing by ages 5 to 6).
Growth Timeline
• 0 to 6 Months: All peachicks look identical (resembling the duller brown/grey female) and have short bodies with no long tail plumes.
• 6 to 12 Months: Young males begin to show subtle color changes, slight differences in side feather barring, and short tail feathers starting to sprout.
• 1 to 2 Years: Yearling males grow a few small protruding tail feathers, though they do not yet have a full train.
• 3 Years: The male attains his full, brilliant eye-spotted tail train and reaches sexual maturity.
• 5 to 6 Years: The train reaches its maximum length, number of feathers, and peak vibrancy.
After each mating season, mature males shed (molt) their entire train and regrow a fresh set in the autumn.
These fowl make a beautiful and striking addition to your farmyard, they naturally loose their beautiful tail feather trains seasonally, makes for a great property alarm, excellent at reducing tick, scorpion and poisonous snake population. Folk legend says the peacock got its beautiful plumage because of the poisonous venom from the snakes it ingested. 🦚
