This is a beautiful Mid-Century Hollywood Regency style Creek Turn Pottery centerpiece bowl featuring a stylized monstera or split-leaf philodendron shape.
The Studio: Founded in 1927 in Hainesport, New Jersey, the Creek-Turn Ceramic Supply Company derived its name from a sweeping curve along the nearby Rancocas Creek. Today, the old, abandoned warehouse site has been transformed into a public recreation area called Creek Turn Park
The Artist: Herman Joseph Kleiner Jr. (1910–1993) was a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He was highly regarded for his organic, sculptural clay forms and his expertise in developing complex, reactive kiln glazes.
The Glaze Effect: The presentation side uses an ivory white or cream base accented by a heavy, stylized brown woodgrain pattern. The rippling concentric circles are molded into the clay to highlight the organic veins of the leaf.
The Gilded Border: The scalloped edges and curled lobes of the leaf are finished with a thick, hand-painted bright gold trim. This combination of natural botanical forms with glamorous metallic detailing was a hallmark of late 1950s and 1960s luxury home decor.
This shell dish has one small chip on the gold gilding trim (see in photos). Otherwise in good condition.
It is large size 19 inches wide by 17 inches tall and 2 inches deep. It is 8 pounds.
