Fun facts:
Like some sailboats, the back end is open allowing excess water to spill out the back (self bailing).
Because of this self bailing design, hollow shell, and wide beam the shell is extremely stable, unsinkable, easy to right, and remount in open water. Your non-rowing friends might be willing to give it a try, mine did.
A sliding rigger is a rowing system in which the rigger assembly moves back and forth instead of the rower’s seat. This keeps the rower’s center of mass more stable relative to the hull, reducing “check” (the backward braking effect during the recovery stroke). It significantly reduces hull oscillation, making the boat faster. They were used in elite racing shells in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They were eventually banned by World Rowing (FISA) because they provided a mechanical advantage considered outside the spirit of the sport. But if you aren’t racing, why not take the advantage.
