Meishan pigs stand apart from most other breeds. Originating in China and known as one of the oldest domesticated pig breeds, they have a rich agricultural history dating back thousands of years. They were prized for their fertility, strong maternal instincts, and ability to thrive in traditional farming systems, traits that still make them incredibly special today.
They are calm, gentle, and deeply affectionate, often forming close bonds with their owners. Naturally more laid-back, they do well on pasture and are far less destructive than typical swine when it comes to rooting.
Their pork is richly marbled, resulting in incredibly tender, flavorful meat often compared to Kobe or Wagyu beef. They also produce exceptionally high-quality lard, prized for cooking and baking.
As a rare heritage breed, Meishans are being carefully preserved for good reason. Their unique traits, unmatched temperament, and deep-rooted history make them truly one of a kind.
