I want to be completely upfront about what this internship is—and isn't—about. My goal isn't to log a few hours and walk away claiming to be a master or an overnight expert in the trade. Instead, my purpose is simply to learn the craft properly, gain real field experience, and practically blend this training with my existing background.
Furthermore, I am strictly looking for hands-on, in-the-field work. I am not interested in remote, desk, or internet-based tasks (like the outside messages or online gigs people sometimes try to push). My focus is purely on physical, on-site trade work.
To secure a structured, hands-on professional internship focused on practical commercial and residential property maintenance, concrete flatwork, and general interior finishing. As a student currently enrolled in the construction training program at the Iowa School of Construction, this internship is designed to complement technical classroom learning with real-world operational experience under professional supervision, while contributing reliable, insured labor to active project sites.
Program Structure & Duration
Total Commitment: 120 Hours
Schedule: Thursdays and Fridays
Timeline: 3 to 5 Months (Flexible progression to accommodate a full-time work schedule)
Core Skill Development & Hour Distribution (120 Total Hours)
1. Concrete & Flatwork (approx. 50 Hours)
Focus: Master the exact nuances of sub-base preparation, precision forming, concrete pouring, grading, finishing, and sealing.
Objective: Gain hands-on competency in high-value structural and decorative flatwork applications to ensure long-term durability and quality presentation.
2. Interior & Exterior Painting & Drywall Preparation (approx. 40 Hours)
Focus: Surface preparation, patching, sanding, priming, cutting, rolling, and proper coating application techniques.
Objective: Learn professional standards for surface restoration and finishing to round out comprehensive property maintenance service packages.
3. General Carpentry, Fixtures & Interior Maintenance (approx. 30 Hours)
Focus: Basic structural repairs, hardware installation, fixture mounting, and general interior upkeep.
Objective: Develop versatile problem-solving and technical skills required for comprehensive facility and property management.
