With an initial capital of $60,000, the company faced early challenges, including the bubonic plague that struck Honolulu shortly after its opening. Over the years, City Mill transitioned from its original rice milling operations to focus on construction materials, especially during World War II when it became a major supplier for the armed forces. Today, City Mill operates multiple locations across Hawaii and remains a family-owned business, continuing the legacy of its founder. Royal Islander is a trademark registered by Smiland Paint Company, with addresses in Alhambra and Los Angeles, California.
