2006 Scion xB — Original Box-Style xB, Toyota 1.5L & Automatic
There's nothing else quite like the original Scion xB. Compact on the outside, surprisingly huge inside, economical to operate, and powered by a simple Toyota drivetrain, this 2006 Scion xB represents the quirky first-generation design that made Scion famous.
Under the hood is Toyota's 1.5-liter naturally aspirated 1NZ-FE 4-cylinder, producing 103 horsepower and 101 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with a traditional 4-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.

One of the coolest things about the original xB is how efficiently it uses its size. At only about 155 inches long, it's extremely easy to maneuver and park, yet the tall roof and box-shaped body provide an incredible amount of passenger and cargo room. With the rear seats folded, there's up to 43.4 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
Mechanically, it's equally straightforward. The 1NZ-FE 1.5L comes from Toyota's small-car engine family and is paired here with an old-school four-speed automatic. No turbocharger, no complicated hybrid system, and no modern downsized powertrain—just a lightweight Toyota drivetrain in a roughly 2,450-pound vehicle.
The first-generation xB has also developed a personality that newer compact crossovers simply don't have. Its unmistakable squared-off styling helped define the early Scion brand, and today a clean original xB stands out even more than it did when new.
For someone looking for an economical commuter, first car, practical runabout, or simply something different from everything else on the road, this little Scion offers a lot of usefulness in a very small package.
Original xB. Toyota 1.5L. Automatic. Huge interior.
Simple, distinctive, and incredibly practical.
One note on MPG: you'll see old sources quoting roughly 30/34 MPG, but EPA methodology changed after this car was originally sold. Current EPA-adjusted references put the automatic around 26 city / 31 highway / 28 combined, so I'd use 26/31/28 in advertising rather than the original-era figure. Edmunds
