This piece is a Victorian “Cottage Style” chest of drawers. This piece features its rare, original warm ochre-yellow paint base decorated with beautifully preserved hand-painted/stenciled grape clusters and delicate brown scrollwork pinstriping. Unlike many pieces from this era, this chest has never been stripped, dipped, or modernly distressed. It retains an incredible, honest historic patina that matches perfectly across the frame and the original turned wooden pull knobs.
Historic features: The twin glove/spool boxes are perfectly intact with tight, historic hinges - a feature often broken or lost over the last 140+ years. Also the 19th Century construction is built from solid American softwoods (pine/poplar). The drawer interiors feature early machine-cut joinery with heavily oxidized wood, and the back is constructed of wide, thick, horizontally oriented roughy-sawn structural planks. 4 smooth sliding full width drawers offering excellant utility alongside historic character.
Excellent antique condition overall. Structurally solid with no loose joints. The paint shows minor, honest cosmetic wear, scuffs, and small chips along the very bottom base skirt and feet, which perfectly validates its age. Painted surfaces are stable and clean.
