Here are some questions you need to ask before you begin a generator back up project.
1. Do I already have a portable heavy enough generator that could be used to plug into a 30-50 amp outside outlet and power my needed circuits in a power outage?
2. Do I want to add a second breaker panel, and put the circuits for the generator in there?
3. If you have a two 200 amp panels, you may want pipes between them, to be able to easily move circuits into the panel of your choice for the generator.
4. You may find a good used 3 phase generator at a good price at a sale, and wonder if you can use that at your house? The answer is YES.
5. Can I buy a big generator, and power my 400 amp service (all circuits on)? YES.
6. Can I install the same type gen outlet at a relatives house, and take my generator there when/if they need it in an emergency? YES
There are other things to consider in a Generator back up system. You are welcome to call and ask, meeting in person to go over the options is the best course of action. Regardless of who you choose to do an electrical install, it is good to speak with someone who understands basic electrical theory and facts. Someone who knows what they are talking about, and can explain it plainly is preferred. For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers on this planet (Titus 1:10).
