Antique Drafting Set COMPASS BREVETTES PERFECTS S.G.D.G. – Brass & Steel Instruments in Wooden Case – Lift Out Lid & Brass Compass – Provenance to Civil Engineer John Hoyert
This listing is for an antique early 20th century drafting instrument set featuring brass and steel compasses, dividers, ruling pens, and attachments housed in its original wooden case. The interior lid displays the ornate gold COMPAS BREVETÉS S.G.D.G. PERFECTS emblem, a mark associated with high quality French precision instruments of the period. A small brass compass is included among the tools, adding to the completeness and authenticity of the set.
This drafting set belonged to John Harry Hoyert, Sr. (1888–1966), a professionally trained civil engineer. Hoyert earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Valparaiso University around 1910–1912. After marrying in 1921, he lived in Woodlawn, Pennsylvania while working at the Pittsburgh Steel Mill. Around 1922–1923 he relocated to Riverdale, Maryland to work for the U.S. Bureau of Standards, performing cable testing and structural evaluation. Later in his career he was responsible for maintaining the elevator inside the Washington Monument, giving this set a meaningful connection to American engineering history.
The instruments show age appropriate patina and wear from genuine use. The velvet lining remains intact, the removable lid fits properly, and the PERFECTS emblem is crisp and visually striking. The wooden case opens and closes smoothly. This is a documented engineering set with provenance, representing the tools used by a trained civil engineer during the era before modern drafting machines and CAD.
