Rare Victorian-era Eugene Berninghaus "Climax" mechanical barber chair circa 1887. While the original brass plate is missing, the chair retains all its hallmark factory features: the iconic polished brass swan-neck arms, original mechanical levers, and the distinct Berninghaus factory flower-pot wood carvings on the frame.
This chair features a walnut frame with Eastlake style carvings covered in a plush red velvet upholstery with decorative trim and dome tacks. It has a swivel base, foot pedal, and brass/brass plated accents. An exceptional, very rare statement piece for a high-end shop, collector, or antique enthusiast.
Operation:
- Pre-hydraulic model: Relies on manual mechanical gear and DOES NOT move up or down.
- Two positions: In the upright position for cutting hair and in the reclined position for shaving.
- Controls: Pull the handle and it swivels. Press the pedal and it reclines.
Condition:
- Recline & Swivel: Fully functional
- Headrest: The headrest pad and notched metal bar are present but the spring/locking pin is missing so the position cannot be adjusted.
- Upholstery: The velvet is in good condition with some lightly faded areas. There are a few spots where the decorative trim is missing or coming loose.
- Plaque: The original factory brass maker's plaques on the back of the chair are missing.
- Footrest: There is some tape residue on the underside.
Repair Needed:
- Footrest: The vertical wood side frame panel that holds the left side of the footrest is cracked and appears to have been repaired. We have not tested it to see if it holds weight so you should assume it needs to be repaired before anyone steps directly onto the footrest to get into the chair.
