$400 or best offer. Antique desk converted from gaming table circa 1880s-1890s. This piece has been in our family for more than 100 years. It belonged to my wife’s grandfather who was a doctor in Indiana. We have used it as a desk, as did previous generations of our family.
It is big, heavy, and interesting. The maker’s mark remains visible on the underside: Mason & Co Makers Chicago.
The same company was known for manufacture of a variety of gaming tables, including roulette and faro tables. As far as I can tell, it has all the original parts other than the material on top, but it needs work. It’s quite wobbly and the original 9-inch screw bolts are no longer secure. One is broken. My wife is afraid it will fall over and injure someone.
It has three drawers with brass locks but no keys. These would have held cards plus money and/or chips and whatnot. A section of one of the feet came off at some time but it separated along the glue line and will be simple to glue back into place.
The green top appears to be some sort of Naugahyde, which wasn’t invented until 1914. The original top was green felt. It appears that a new top could easily be substituted. The Naugahyde has obvious damage including a ripped section and cigarette burns. A new felt top will restore it to its original use as a card table. A new leather or Naugahyde top will allow it to continue as an awesome desk. Your choice.
Measurements for the top are 69 by 41 inches, and it stands 48 inches tall.
She’s looking for someone to bring her back to life. Could be you.
