The Zenith Radio Corporation manufactured high-quality home receivers in Chicago, Illinois, establishing itself as a prominent leader in the American electronics industry. During the early 1930s, the company produced elaborate floor-standing radios designed to serve as prominent pieces of living room furniture. These cabinets were crafted using fine wood veneers and detailed carvings that matched the popular domestic interior styles of the period.
Families placed these large floor-standing units in their living rooms to gather together for evening news broadcasts, musical programs and dramatic serials. The built-in loudspeakers and sensitive electronic circuits brought nationwide entertainment directly into suburban and urban homes. As household audio technology advanced and smaller table radios became preferred, these heavy wooden console models were replaced and relegated to storage or retired from daily use.
