The Philadelphia Storage Battery Company made radios like this in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during the height of the early broadcasting era. These tabletop models were built to bring entertainment into family homes when radio was the central focus of domestic evening life. The distinctive rounded arch cabinet, often called a cathedral style, was created to fit stylishly into living rooms while housing both the speaker and the delicate electronics inside.
Families placed these wooden cabinets on parlor tables or dedicated stands, tuning in to listen to news broadcasts, comedy stores and musical programs together every evening. Listeners gathered around the glowing dial window to catch their favorite programs before television transformed home entertainment. As later cabinet designs shifted towards larger console units and modern plastic materials, these small arched wooden radios were eventually retired from active daily use
