This is an original WWII German fighting knife, commonly referred to as a boot knife because of the metal blade spring for securing it to cloth, leather, etc. This one has had black friction tape added around the wooden handle and has been on it for a very long time. It has "sunk" into the pattern and shape of the wooden handle. I don't believe the handle is damaged based on the condition of the wrapping. There is no movement observed when I put pressure on the handle, and the imprints of all the rivets are clear. I believe the tape was added to aid firm grip. Wooden handles get quite slippery when wet. The wrapping is very well done, probably by the owner or the GI that "liberated" it.
The blade shows normal use with some minor dark rust and some minor pitting from normal field use/exposure. The blade has been lightly sharpened. The blade, near the hand guard, is marked with the stylized ordnance eagle with the number "5" in the middle.
The scabbard is of the blued type with scrapes and some worn areas. The spring clip is tight and strong with no movement. This is a very tight knife that has seen honest use.
