9 Sapphire Gem Hens ~6 mos old and laying. High egg production.
These are docile birds, excellent egg layers, a great choice for an egg production enterprise.
The Sapphire Gem is a popular, medium-sized, sex-linked, hybrid chicken breed believed to originate from the Czech Republic via crosses between Blue Plymouth Rock and Barred Plymouth Rock, Old Andalusian lines. They have striking blue, lavender, or slate-grey feathers, often featuring a darker grey or blue "necklace" around the neck.
They produce sex-linked chicks, making them identifiable by sex at hatch. Male chicks typically have a light spot on their head or wing, while females show a more uniform dark grey or blue down. They produce roughly 260 to 290 large to extra-large brown eggs per year (about 5 to 6 eggs a week per hen). HOWEVER, these hens lay PREDOMINANTLY BLUE TO PALE GREEN EGGS, with a FEW LAYING PINK EGGS. They rarely go broody.
This is an exceptionally hardy breed doing well in both hot summers and freezing winters. Generally considered a healthy, robust, and resilient breed. They are active and skilled free-rangers that do well exploring enclosed or semi-enclosed yards. They are docile, friendly, calm, and relatively quiet, making them ideal for backyard flocks and beginners. They have long life spans, generally living between 5 to 10 years, offering several years of egg production. They are not ideal for meat production.
Breeding Note: Because they are a hybrid, they do not "breed true," meaning hatching their eggs will not reliably reproduce the exact same Sapphire Gem traits. Just being upfront here...
