The McIntosh C28 is a solid state stereo preamplifier made in the United States by McIntosh, produced from 1970 to 1978 and considered one of McIntosh's first-generation solid state preamplifiers from the brand's celebrated golden era, with around 22,000 units built. Each channel is built in four sections, comprising a low-level amplifier, a high-level amplifier, active filters, and a dedicated headphone amplifier, powered by common regulated power supplies for both channels. It offers dual phono inputs with an MM phono stage, along with tape head and microphone inputs, high-level inputs for aux, tuner, and tape, plus main and tape outputs to drive either a stereo amplifier or a pair of monoblocks. Featuring the classic McIntosh look with a backlit glass faceplate, large polished control knobs, and illuminated push-buttons, along with independent left and right bass and treble tone controls, active filters, loudness compensation, and a Stereo/Mono/Mix switch, the C28 remains a favorite among collectors for its low distortion, easy serviceability, and timeless vintage styling.
