I’m looking for someone in the Eureka/Humboldt area to fabricate a replacement dining tabletop for my 36-foot sailboat.
I have the existing tabletop, which will serve as the template. The new tabletop should be essentially the same shape and dimensions, with one modification. I’d like approximately 1 1/2 inch removed from each of the three edges facing the horseshoe seating area, to make it easier to get in and out of the seating area.
Measurements:
- Short length: 40 in.
- Long length: 41 in.
- Long width: 28.5 in.
- Short width: 21 in.
I will remove the existing tabletop and can deliver it locally to your shop/workspace. I’ll also pick up the finished table and handle the installation myself.
The existing stainless mounting hardware underneath needs to be reused. It attaches to the tabletop with six heavy-duty screws, so the replacement needs to be substantial enough to securely accept that hardware.
I’m very open to ideas on materials and appearance. Solid wood is my first thought, perhaps teak, mahogany, or another durable hardwood, but I’d also be interested in something more creative. Live-edge wood, contrasting woods, epoxy/resin, or another interesting material could all be possibilities. I’m not trying to exactly reproduce the existing white-and-wood table.
The priorities are:
- Durable enough for regular use aboard a cruising sailboat
-Highly water resistant
-Low maintenance
-Attractive and well finished
-Rounded/safe edges appropriate for use on a boat
-Internal bevel so that dishes don't slide easily off it at sea
There’s no firm deadline and I don’t have a predetermined budget. I’d like to hear your ideas and get a quote based on the design and materials you recommend.
Photos show the current tabletop, the underside mounting hardware, and the table installed in the salon.
If interested, please send me a little information about your woodworking/fabrication experience, any photos of similar work, your thoughts on how you’d build it, and a rough price range.
