This all-mahogany guitar is proof that the size descriptions of acoustic guitars is sliding from the silly into the ridiculous. Orangewood’s website refers to this as a “min-grand-concert.” I’ll just call it a medium size…about midway between a Martin 00 and 000.
The appearance is handsome but subdued, with an overall matte finish accenting the dark burgundy body (solid top) and black binding and trim.
Although not technically “new” because it has changed hands, I challenge anyone to find a nick, bump, scratch or other imperfection. The literature says that they are “set up in Los Angeles” but I worked over the bone nut and saddle to lower the string height for greater playability.
The action is now near the very lowest extreme specified for an acoustic guitar. Even so, all notes play clear and clean everywhere on the fretboard with no rattles, buzzes, doubles or “wolf notes.” It plays like a new Martin. The sound is full and rich, especially for a mid-sized, mid-priced guitar.
The Orangewood brand has proven to be very well built and finished. They use sealed tuning gears along with genuine bone nuts and saddles.
The outfit includes the original thickly padded soft case (too nice to call it a gig bag).
