This Epi is a low-to-mid level instrument but has been meticulously set up and now plays and sounds great.
Full disclosure: I found this guitar being hoarded by a non-player who had no idea about what it could do. It was in good basic condition, with no cracks, dents or other structural problems…it just need some luthier-love.
Here is a list of the lutherie work performed over the last month:
• Rehumidify the guitar body to help restore a proper neck angle
• Restring (phosphor bronze 12s) and evaluate
• Remove and re-glue the lifting bridge, taper reaming the pin holes
• Replace plastic nut and saddle with genuine bone pieces
• File the nut grooves for low action and ease of fingering
• Shave the saddle for optimum string height at the upper fret positions
• Level and dress all frets
• Install a JLD Bridge Doctor cantilever brace for improved sound and action
• Lube tuning gears and tighten screws
• Adjust the truss rod to complete the setup
• Oil, clean and polish the entire instrument
The result: It now plays like my $800 Epi Masterbilt. All notes sound clean and clear at all fret positions, with no buzzes, doubles or “wolf notes.”
The outfit includes a decent fiberboard case; typical of entry level guitars before gig bags became popular.
