Almost all of the eggs you buy at the store are unregulated, as far as the condition of the chickens who produce them. Eggs that are labeled "cage free" mean the hens are not caged singly. Most of the time that means packed into a cage that is about 1 square foot per hen, which means their beaks must be trimmed so they don't peck each other to death or pull each other's feathers out. Unless they are cage free within a barn, they never come in contact with the ground, so they cannot dirt-bathe (a natural behavior for chickens). They also don't get sunlight. Their light is regulated as much as their genetics are. Commercial egg layers are not traditional or heritage breeds of chickens. All of the advertising on egg cartons are not enforced by the government with the exception of Pasture-Raised + Humane Certified, and it's the humane certified part that actually makes a difference. Pasture raised is not really defined and hence hard to enforce.

The chickens I have are moved to fresh pasture every two days almost always. They also have an activity area located with their coop where they can dirt-bathe. They are always outside in the sunlight under shade. They have about 5 square feet per hen. They are also fed non-GMO feed along with a variety of plants.
