This tankard has a pewter (tin/zinc alloy) lid and features a colorful medieval tavern or carousing scene in 3D molded relief. The figures are shown in historical attire (such as Landsknechte mercenaries) carousing under a stone archway.
This was purchased in Germany in the 1980s. It is 10" tall and on the bottom there is the oval stamp which was the official pottery mark for Marzi and Remy which was the renowned German stoneware factory operated out of Hohr-Grenzhausen from 1879 until its closure in 1994. The number 3137 on the bottom corresponds to the factory's design catalog entry for the Carousing Landsknechte motif. The 10 mark on the bottom actually designates a 1 liter capacity of the body. It is believed that this stein was produced in the 1960s. On the lid are the specific markings of DBGM.
This tankard is in pristine, like new condition as it was safely displayed on a library shelf for years. A true collectible!
