The Newell Cottage is located on the shore of Lake Salem in Derby, in the Northeast Kingdom near the Canadian border. It has a private 100-foot sandy beach and is great for swimming, fishing, and enjoying beach life. The cottage has its own dock and a 12-foot aluminum rowboat, which can be used with a small outboard motor. The lake is shallow a long way out, making it safe for swimming, with a drop-off about 100 yards from shore. The cottage is located on a peninsula separating Big Salem from Little Salem. Both lakes are excellent for fishing, with plenty of bass, walleye, and salmon.
The Northeast Kingdom is one of Vermont’s hidden treasures. The area has been called the Switzerland of Vermont because of beautiful mountains such as Jay Peak, Burke, and Owls Head, which are great for hiking. Numerous lakes, such as Memphremagog, Seymour, Willoughby, Caspian, and Echo, add to the beauty of the area. Montreal lies less than two hours away for a day of international food and sightseeing. The area has several golf courses, and tennis courts are available in Derby.
The interior of the Newell Cottage has skylights to bring in the sunshine and light. The large living room has a fieldstone fireplace for cozy evenings. A screened-in front porch runs the length of the cottage for dining, watching sunsets over Lake Salem, or napping. It is a wonderful place to enjoy the full Vermont experience.
The cottage has three full bedrooms and two sleeping lofts (a guaranteed hit with the kids). The master bedroom has a queen bed. The other two bedrooms each have two single beds. The two sleeping lofts have double beds.
The kitchen was recently remodeled. It is well equipped with a microwave, coffee maker, stove, and refrigerator, plus plentiful plates, utensils, pots and pans, and serving and storage equipment.
The bathroom has a tub and shower. The cottage has a vacant beachfront lot beside it for added privacy.
Because we have four cottages right in a row (although very private), they are ideal for sharing a vacation with another family in a neighboring cottage. We try to accommodate such groups to the extent that we can. Most of our cottagers have been coming to Lake Salem for years.
We are currently closed for the season. We are accepting requests for next summer from June 15-September 15 for weekly rentals. We do honor the requests of returning cottagers so will open to others on January 1. Please forward your interest now and we will contact you at the beginning of the year
