"Chummer" McCranels Original Surfboard — Hand-Shaped Piece of Surf History
— LOCAL PICKUP ONLY — SERIOUS OFFERS WELCOME — CASH ONLY — SHERIFF PRESENT FOR SAFETY
Offering a genuine 1980s board, entirely designed, shaped, and glassed by hand by "Chummer" McCranels — inducted into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame and a legend of Singer Island surfing.
By profession he was an orthodontist, and that scientific, detail-oriented mindset comes through clearly in the shaping. He was always thinking about how to pull the best possible performance out of a wave, and this board is a direct result of that thinking — built around kinetics and hydrodynamics rather than turned out on any kind of production line.
I purchased this board directly from Chummer himself in 1989. He was genuinely excited about this particular design and encouraged me strongly to go for it.
The tail is a standout feature — wide, winged hips that flare and then cut sharply into a flat, squared edge, shaped so a rider can step back and use water pressure against the tail to stabilize sharp pivot turns.
There's also a hand-scooped concave near the tail and a subtle concave belly toward the nose on the bottom — details you can feel clearly in person, even though they're hard to capture in a photo.
"Natural Art" branding appears on both the deck and the bottom of the board. On the stringer, Chummer's own handwriting lists the board's specs: "Chummer" 9-87, Hang Ten, 9'6", Nose Rider — 930 Turbo, along with serial number 947149.
I surfed this board myself for roughly 10 years after buying it, then kept it stored — completely dry — in a climate-controlled living room for the following 27 years. Call it a "beater" if you want, but that wear tells the story of a board that was actually ridden and loved, first by Chummer and then by me, not one that was neglected.
It would benefit from the attention of an experienced vintage surfboard restorer to bring it back to full museum-quality condition.
Full photos included showing stringer markings, tail shape, and overall condition for authentication purposes.
