Flocks are assembled for breeding purposes. Some of the ewes might be related to each other, but you will be able to breed the rams to all ewes in each flock.
New to Soay Sheep?
Soays are originally from Scotland, where they thrive free ranging. They like and thrive in the cool weather in Montana, but they need to have a shelter to get out of the rain and shade from the sun in the summer.
Soay Sheep are independent and rather autonomous. They lamb on their own and love life as a flock animal. They do not need to be shorn, but shed their wool independently. They make a really good Homestead animal, as they are very productive and require relatively little care.
They love eating weeds and improve pastures tremendously. If you want to turn a weed field into a beautiful pasture, Soays can do that for you. They are especially fond of weed flowers, even thistles, and thus eliminate them complete eventually. They eat Tansy, Knapweed, Canadian thistle, hounds tongue, dandelions etc. After several years of keeping Soays on our fields, they look like a golf course!
Besides food (pasture in the summer, hay in the winter, and maybe additional grain or sheep feed to make them your friends), Soay Sheep need constant access to clean water, a salt lick and sheep minerals.
Soay Sheep are also a delicacy.
