How the Game Works
The Setup: A grid of 25 cards is laid out, each containing a single word. These words represent the secret codenames of different agents.
The Teams: Players split into two teams (Red vs. Blue). Each team nominates one Spymaster, while the other players act as Field Operatives.
The Goal: The Spymasters can see a master key grid showing which words belong to their team, which belong to the opposing team, and which card is the deadly Assassin. The first team to successfully identify all their own agents wins.
The Gameplay: Spymasters take turns giving a one-word clue followed by a number (e.g., "Animal: 3"). Their teammates must guess which words on the table connect to that clue without accidentally picking the opponent's words or triggering the Assassin, which instantly ends the game in a loss.
It is widely considered one of the best party games ever made because it is easy to learn, scales well for larger groups, and creates fun, tense moments of communication.
