Dakota is a 20-year-old BLM Mustang gelding, standing approximately 15.2 hands. He is a kind, gentle horse who is looking for a patient and consistent person to continue building a partnership with.
Dakota previously worked as a therapeutic horse, where he was used to help retired veterans and would calmly lead people around. This experience speaks to his gentle nature and his ability to take care of his person when he understands his job. He has also been very gentle around children.
Dakota has been trail ridden extensively, including some fairly steep and rocky terrain, and has done well barefoot. He currently goes without shoes and has been good for the farrier. His teeth were most recently done in June 2026.
He has generally been pretty easy to catch and is willing to please. Dakota can be shy and reserved when he first gets to know someone and does have some trust issues that can be worked through with patience and consistent handling. He is also somewhat head shy.
Dakota has sarcoids in his ears, which make him particularly sensitive about having his ears handled. He will need someone who is patient and willing to continue working with him while respecting his sensitivities.
Dakota is not a horse for a very beginner. He needs a confident, experienced person who can support him when he is unsure or encounters something new. He does best with someone who can calmly give him confidence and direction rather than becoming nervous or unsure themselves.
He currently lives in his own paddock, sharing a fence line with other horses, but has been kept separately from them.
Dakota is a horse who really benefits from consistency, patience, and a relationship-based approach. Once he trusts you and understands what is being asked of him, he is willing to try and wants to please. He would be a great fit for someone who enjoys taking their time, building a partnership, and helping a horse gain confidence.
Dakota is looking for someone who will continue to invest in him and give him the consistency he needs to thrive.
